How Do I Pick The Right Leotard?

The leotard is possibly the most important wardrobe essential for a gymnast, and nowadays there are some beautiful colours and fabrics out there to pick from.  Speaking from a gymnast’s point of view, it’s important to take into consideration both the fabric and the fit.  The material you choose should be comfy; a scratchy leotard can make you sore.  When you perform you’re going to perspire, and if your leotard doesn’t absorb well, it can be very uncomfortable.  Since gymnasts require great flexibility, it’s essential to wear something that fits tightly, yet isn’t saggy.

Sleeves

Sleeves is another thing to be taken into account.  Many gymnasts don’t like to have their arms covered. Personally, during the hot season I wear sleeveless leotards, but during the winter months I prefer to train in a long sleeved one.

How Many Leotards Should I Own?

Another thing to bear in mind is having more than one leotard.  True enough, leotards can get expensive, but you can always buy a used leo at a Goodwill store or a garage sale. Just remember to wash it well before using it.  You can also find high quality ones online.  A site I like is http://getleotards.com  I think the amount of leotards you own should be based on the number of days you go to the gym.  For example if you workout three days a week, then you should have three leotards.

Competition Leotards

When you’re in competition it’s vital to both look and feel your very best.  You want to be focusing on your performance, not whether or not your leotard is bunching or slipping up.  Try to look for a competition leotard that is durable, made from quality fabric, and has been well-designed.  There are many  leotard companies out there nowadays to choose from.  Lately, I’ve been wearing leotards from a French designer: Moreau.

While some gymnasts wear boring, one-colour, cotton leotards day after day, we also have the opportunity to express our personality.  There are loads of beautiful and interesting leotards out there to pick from.  Here are two really strange ones that I particularly like.
